Type 1 diabetes occurs in about15% of all cases of diabetes. While it usually occurs in people under the age of 30, it can happen at any age. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system destroys the cell of the pancreas that produces insulin. It is believed that virus or chemical may cause this reaction in people who are genetically predisposed. Type 1 diabetes can develop quite suddenly and person may have rapid and significant weight loss over sever weeks. In older people it may be less rapid.
